“Do I need to be on social media?” is the most common question local business owners ask. The honest answer is: yes, but not the way most people think.

You don’t need to be everywhere

Being on fifteen platforms with nothing to post is worse than being excellent on two. For most local businesses, Instagram and Facebook cover the majority of their existing customers, with Google Business Profile arguably the most important of all.

What to post

Local businesses have a huge advantage: real, visual, human content. You don’t need a studio budget.

  • Behind the scenes — your team at work, the process, the day-to-day
  • Before and after — finished results speak louder than any caption
  • Customer moments — with permission, these are your most engaging posts
  • Local context — community events, seasonal advice, what’s happening nearby
  • Useful tips — short, genuinely helpful advice in your area of expertise
  • Reposts of happy customers — social proof always performs well

What doesn’t work

  • Constant promotional posts — nobody follows a billboard
  • Generic stock imagery
  • Posting and then abandoning it for six months
  • Copy-pasting the same caption everywhere
  • Buying followers — it inflates the numbers and kills engagement

Consistency beats intensity

Three good posts a week, every week, outperforms thirty posts in one month followed by silence. Platforms reward accounts that show up regularly, and so do customers — they start to recognise you.

Make it sustainable

The most common failure we see isn’t bad content — it’s burnout. Someone is trying to run social media alone, on top of their actual job, with no plan.

A simple content calendar, a batch of photos taken in one sitting, and a mix of AI-assisted drafting with human editing will keep you consistent without burning out.

How to measure it

Don’t obsess over follower counts. Track what actually matters:

  • Profile visits and link clicks
  • Direct messages and inquiries
  • Phone calls
  • New customers who mention how they found you

Social media is a relationship channel, not a numbers game. Done consistently, it makes you the business people already know and trust when they need you.
