Most local businesses treat online listings as an afterthought. They set them up once, forget about them, and quietly lose customers to competitors who stay on top of theirs.

But here’s the thing: listings are the cheapest marketing you’ll ever do. They’re free, they show up when people are actively looking for you, and most of your competitors have not optimised them.

Why listings matter

Your business listings tell Google who you are, what you do and where you are. That information drives your local search results and the local map pack — the section Google shows at the top of local searches.

Consistency is everything

The single most important rule is called NAP consistency: your Name, Address and Phone number must be identical everywhere they appear.

We regularly find businesses with five different versions of their own phone number. Google sees this as conflicting information and loses confidence in which one is correct — which costs you rankings.

The directories that matter most

  • Google Business Profile — by far the most important
  • Apple Maps — essential for iPhone users
  • Yelp — still significant for reviews and trust
  • Bing Places — increasingly used by voice assistants
  • Facebook — often the customer’s first social check
  • Industry-specific sites — chamber of commerce, trade associations, local directories

What a complete listing looks like

  1. Correct business name (your real name, not keyword-stuffed)
  2. Accurate address and service area
  3. Correct, consistent phone number
  4. Primary and secondary categories
  5. A real business description written in plain language
  6. Business hours, including holidays
  7. Fresh, geotagged photos
  8. Attributes: payment methods, amenities, accessibility
  9. Products or services listed

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Keyword-stuffing the business name (it violates Google’s guidelines)
  • Leaving the description empty
  • Outdated hours or a disconnected phone number
  • Duplicate listings you don’t know about
  • No photos, or photos from five years ago

Correcting listings is unglamorous work, but it’s fast, it’s usually free, and it has an immediate effect on how often you show up when someone nearby is ready to buy.
